The Big Blue in Gelendzhik

The Black Sea coast near the villages of Dzhankhot and Divnomorskoe is very rocky. The height of the rocks in some places reaches more than a hundred meters or higher. Pitsunda’s pines grow at the top and along the slope of the rocks. In this area there is a very beautiful place called the Big Blue.

The Big Blue is a rocky coast of the Black sea, completely overgrown with relict pines. The height of the cliff exceeds 100 meters, but you can approach it and admire the waters of the Black sea. In some places, they are azure, in others blue. The trunks of pitsund’s pines lean over the cliff. The air is very clean and the whole place is very romantic.

Along the coast near the villages of Divnomorskoe, Dzhanhot, Praskoveevka and Betta Pitsunda’s pines grow almost everywhere. They have long needles, the height of the crown is more than 25 meters. A variety of this pine was first discovered and described in the 19th century in Abkhazia, near the village of Pitsunda. But today the main area of growth of pitsunda’s pine is located in the vicinity of Gelendzhik. The area of these pines is a protected area.

In the area of the Big Blue, you can go down to the sea from a high rocky shore. The path is quite difficult and sometimes very steep, but in the end you go down to the beach of large pebbles. It is located at the foot of rocky slabs. The water here is perfectly clear and clean.

Rocks in the area of Gelendzhik consist of marl slabs. It is a rock based on dolomite, limestone and clay. It can be of different colors, depending on the predominant minerals in it. There is a lot of limestone in the area of the Big Blue in marl, so the cliff face is so bright white. In some places on the beach, the structure of white marl slabs looks very picturesque, especially at sunset.

There used to be a car camp in the Big Blue area, but it was closed in 2017. Now here in the summer you can still see campers in tents, but in general, there is nothing to disturb the beauty of the local nature. If you want to see the Big Blue, then you need to leave the car near the barrier on the highway and walk 1.5 kilometers to the sea.
