The Military History Museum is one of those places in Almaty that is convenient to combine with a walk. It is located right in the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. The museum occupies the second floor of the Officers` House. The exhibition is modest but informative. Three main sections await you: ancient weapons of nomads, the Great Patriotic War, and military conflicts of the second half of the 20th century.
History of the Museum
The museum traces its history back to 1965, when, on the initiative of the command of the Central Asian Military District, a museum room was established at the Army House. Gradually the collection grew, and in 1978 the museum moved to the new monumental building of the Officers` House — an architectural gem adorning the park area of the city. Since 2016, the institution has become part of the National Military-Patriotic Center of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
A special role in the development of the museum was played by Valentina Ivanovna Panfilova-Baykadamova — the daughter of the legendary General Ivan Panfilov. It was she who for many years was involved in filling the museum: people, learning that the daughter of the renowned commander worked at the museum, began to bring here their most precious family relics — front-line letters, awards, personal belongings of their heroic ancestors. Today this work is continued by her daughter, Alua Baykadamova, who heads the museum and carefully preserves the legacy of remembrance.

What Can Be Seen at the Military History Museum of Almaty
The museum`s exhibition covers an area of over 2,000 square meters and spans a vast historical period — from the era of Saka warriors to modern peacekeeping missions.
Hall of Antiquity
Here are presented the armor and weapons of the nomads of the Great Steppe: chain mail, swords, items of military equipment, allowing one to imagine what the warriors who defended these lands centuries ago looked like.
The Great Patriotic War — The Heart of the Exhibition
This is the most extensive section of the Military History Museum of Almaty. The exhibition is structured as a route through the main stages of the war: from the defense of the Brest Fortress to the storming of Berlin. A special place is occupied by materials about the legendary 316th Rifle Division under the command of Major General Ivan Panfilov.
Here you can see the personal belongings of General Panfilov — a pocket watch and the cover of his party membership card, as well as original certificates conferring the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on the Panfilov men. One of the most poignant relics is a brick brought from the Brest Fortress, melted after the use of flamethrowers in the first days of the war. And the photograph of eighteen-year-old Imangali Nurmakhanov, who wrote on his Komsomol membership card in his own blood: "I will die, but I will not take a step back," leaves no one indifferent.
In total, during the war years, 12 rifle divisions, 4 cavalry divisions, 8 brigades and many other units were formed in Kazakhstan. The museum features exhibitions dedicated to the defense of Moscow, the Siege of Leningrad, where the 310th and 314th Rifle Divisions, formed in Kazakhstan, fought heroically, as well as the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk.
Equipment and Armament
The Military History Museum of Almaty houses 122 exhibits representing armored vehicles, artillery and mortar systems, weapons and special military equipment. Among them are rarities that exist in single copies. Impressive are the accurate models of aircraft, artillery pieces, reconnaissance vehicles and anti-aircraft installations.
Hall of Glory
A separate hall is dedicated to Kazakhstanis who participated in the Afghan War. Here are collected photographs, awards and personal belongings of internationalist soldiers — a poignant chronicle of heroism and self-sacrifice.
Open-Air Museum
In 2025, for the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Military History Museum of Almaty acquired a new unique space. An open-air exhibition of military equipment was opened on the territory adjacent to the Army House, becoming an extension of the Memorial of Glory in the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen.
Here are presented about 30 pieces of military equipment and artillery pieces that have undergone complete restoration. Among the exhibits are the legendary T-34 tank, the famous "Katyusha," howitzers, anti-aircraft searchlights and even German equipment.
Of particular interest is the story associated with the T-34 tank. Few people know that its production during the war could have stopped due to a shortage of manganese, necessary for the smelting of armor steel. It was the Kazakh scientist Kanysh Satpayev who discovered a new manganese deposit in Zhezkazgan, which saved the country`s tank production.
Tips for Visitors
The museum is two-story, the exhibition halls are compact but very rich. It is recommended to allocate at least one and a half to two hours for viewing. Museum staff conduct engaging tours and readily share the stories behind the exhibits.
