Charyn Canyon is located 195 kilometers from Almaty and is part of the Charyn National Park. It is one of the most visited natural attractions in Kazakhstan. The canyon was formed in a thickness of sedimentary rocks under the influence of the Charyn River waters and wind erosion. Its length along the riverbed is 154 kilometers, and the depth of the cliffs reaches 300 meters. For tourists, an entrance area to the Valley of Castles has been developed — the most popular section of the canyon, accessible for walking tours.
Charyn Canyon is often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States, and there are reasons for this: similar geological structure, multilayered rock exposures, and impressive gorge depth. However, there is a fundamental difference that makes Charyn more attractive for the practical traveler.
The American Grand Canyon stretches for 446 kilometers, and its exploration requires several days and serious logistics. Charyn Canyon, on the other hand, is compact: the key area — the Valley of Castles — is concentrated on a 2–3 kilometer stretch. The entire route along the bottom and back takes 2–3 hours, allowing you to see landscapes of comparable scale without multi-day treks and complex planning. In essence, Charyn Canyon provides the same geological experience, but in a more concentrated and accessible format.
Geological History: How the Canyon Was Formed
More than 300 million years ago, a warm sea splashed on the site of the modern canyon. This is evidenced by Paleozoic limestones with fossilized shells of brachiopods — ancient marine mollusks that can still be found in the rocks.
About 25–30 million years ago, during the Tertiary period, a large lake existed here. The climate gradually changed, the lake dried up, and landscapes reminiscent of modern savannas formed in its place. The Charyn River, cutting its way through sedimentary rocks, and the wind, polishing stones for millions of years, created the remarkable spectacle we see today.
The Valley of Castles is a natural geological section where rocks of different ages and compositions are exposed. In the upper part of the gorge, where the tourist route begins, red-colored sandstones and siltstones are exposed. Their characteristic hue is the result of a high content of oxidized iron, which accumulated in sediments during periods of arid climate.
As the trail descends lower and approaches the level of the Charyn River, the geological picture changes: sandstones are replaced by darker rocks, in which the content of basalts noticeably increases. Basalts have a dense, fine-grained structure and a dark color, which contrasts sharply with the red deposits at the beginning of the route. This transition is explained by the fact that the base of the section contains more ancient rocks formed as a result of volcanic activity, while the upper layers are younger sedimentary accumulations. Thus, within a single gorge, one can observe two different stages of the formation of the earth`s crust in this area.
Locations of Charyn Canyon: More Than Just the Valley of Castles
The entire Charyn Canyon for 150 kilometers is a system of unique gorges, each with its own characteristics:
• Moon Canyon — here an otherworldly landscape prevails: light yellow, almost white cliffs with soft lines create the feeling of walking on another planet.
• Black Canyon — a dramatic and harsh gorge with dark cliffs, where a turquoise river rages below. From here, breathtaking panoramas of 300-meter cliffs open up.
However, the main gem for which tourists come from all over the world is the Valley of Castles.
Valley of Castles: The Heart of Charyn Canyon
When travelers speak of visiting Charyn Canyon, in most cases they mean exactly the Valley of Castles. And this is no coincidence.
An important clarification: the Valley of Castles is not the canyon of the Charyn River itself, but a dry gorge located perpendicular to the main riverbed. It was washed out by meltwater in the thickness of sedimentary rocks and now represents a separate, perfectly preserved geological monument.
The length of this gorge is about 2 kilometers, the width varies from 50 to 130 meters, and the depth reaches 100 meters. It is here that nature has created a real stone city: bizarre cliffs resembling medieval castles, towers, columns, and even stone guards. Local legends say that spirits inhabit these cliffs. The name "Valley of Castles" was given to this place by the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who participated in an expedition in 1851.
Infrastructure at the Entrance to the Valley of Castles
The entrance to the Valley of Castles in Charyn Canyon is equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable visit. The entrance fee for pedestrians is 500 tenge, for vehicle entry — 1000 tenge, and it is worth noting that payment is accepted only in cash. At the entrance you will find:
• a visitor center where you can get information about the routes;
• a cafe where you can have a snack before your walk;
• authentic Kazakh yurts where you can stay overnight — yurts are rented as a whole, which is convenient for groups;
• сonvenient parking.
Routes for Exploring Charyn Canyon
Tourists have two main routes, each offering unique experiences.
Walk Along the Bottom of the Canyon
From the visitor center, an equipped trail leads down to the canyon floor. The descent takes about 20–30 minutes. In summer, it is especially pleasant to walk along the canyon bottom — it is not as hot here as above.
What you will see:
• as you walk along the bottom, you will find yourself among 100-meter stone walls composed of red sandstones and marls;
• you will see bizarre formations: "stone towers," "columns," and "arches" created by wind and water over centuries;
• along the way, you will encounter relict plants: saxaul, as well as Sogdian ash — a tree that survived the Ice Age;
• you will reach the bank of the Charyn River, where you can rest in the shade and enjoy the cool water.
The entire walk along the bottom takes about 2–3 hours at a moderate pace. Keep in mind: the climb back can be tiring, especially in hot weather.
Walk Along the Northern Rim
For those who want to see the canyon from above, there is a trail along the northern edge of the gorge. This path leads to a viewing platform located approximately 1.3 kilometers from the visitor center.
What you will see:
• stunning panoramas of the Valley of Castles from above;
• the opportunity to appreciate the scale of the canyon and see those same "castles" from a different angle;
• a unique geological section: from here, the multilayered deposits of rocks of different ages are clearly visible.
When to Go and What to Consider When Visiting Charyn Canyon
The best time to visit is April–June and September–October, when the weather is comfortable. Summer heat in July–August can be exhausting: temperatures often exceed +35°C, so during this period it is recommended to visit the canyon early in the morning or at sunset.
How to Get to Charyn Canyon
Charyn Canyon is located approximately 200 kilometers from Almaty. Travel time by car is about 3–4 hours depending on road conditions and the route. Most of the road passes along the new toll highway Almaty — Khorgos, and the last kilometers along regional roads.
It is important to keep in mind: there is no public transport from Almaty to the canyon. Theoretically, you can take a regular bus to the nearest settlements, for example to Chilik or Chundzha, and from there look for a taxi, but this method is extremely inconvenient, takes a lot of time, and does not guarantee that you will find a car back. Moreover, no taxi driver will agree to wait for you for several hours while you walk around the canyon, and a taxi ride from Almaty and back will cost a considerable amount that is hardly justified.
Thus, there are realistically only two options for getting to the Valley of Castles and returning comfortably.
Rented Car
The most flexible and popular way for independent travelers. If you rent a car, you have full control over your time: you can arrive early in the morning at opening time, leave late in the evening, catch the sunset, and even combine the trip with visiting other nearby locations. The entrance ticket for a vehicle to the national park territory is paid separately — 1000 tenge.
Organized Excursion to Charyn Canyon
The simplest and most popular option for tourists without personal transport. Group tours depart daily from Almaty, and the cost usually includes transfer from the hotel, guide services, and entrance tickets.
Advantages of the excursion:
• comfort: you will be picked up at your hotel and brought back;
• informative: the guide will tell you about the geology, history, and legends of the canyon;
• variety of programs: you can choose a one-day tour only to Charyn Canyon or a combined one — for example, a two-day tour with visits to Kolsai Lakes and Lake Kaindy.
The main advantage of Charyn Canyon for tourists is clear logistics. 2–3 hours along the bottom of the Valley of Castles — and you have already completed the main part of the route, and by evening you return to Almaty. If you want more time, the yurts at the entrance solve the issue of overnight accommodation. No special training is required: any comfortable shoes will do, and from equipment — only water. The simplicity of organization and clear route make this trip one of the most accessible among large natural sites in the vicinity of Almaty, which means it can easily be recommended to both beginners and experienced travelers.
