Back

Most tourists, upon arriving at the Charyn Canyon, habitually head down — down the staircase at the visitor center, where the canyon depth is only about 50 meters. They then walk along the bottom of the "Valley of Castles" and, having reached the river, return back the same way. This is the classic route, and it is a good one.

But there is another path, which not many people know about — the Charyn Canyon Northern Rim Trail. It runs along the upper edge of the canyon, and people often choose it by accident: they see gazebos of viewing platforms in the distance, turn onto the trail along the cliff, and... later regret that they didn`t descend immediately. Because after walking a kilometer along the top, you will physically no longer be able to descend to the bottom: the sheer walls reach 200–300 meters in height, and there are no staircases here.

But if you prepare in advance and choose the Northern Rim Trail consciously — you will find not a "losing alternative," but a completely different, no less impressive view of the canyon.

The Main Advantage of the Charyn Canyon Northern Rim Trail: The Panorama

Down below, you see scale — walls looming overhead, the play of shadows, a narrow corridor of stone.

Up above the Charyn Canyon, you see its structure. From the northern rim, the canyon opens up as a giant cross-section of the earth: you look down on it from above, as if it were a map carved by time. From here, the famous Castles are particularly visible — the whimsical rock towers that from below appear as a solid wall, but from above reveal themselves as separate giants standing in tight formation.

Three Platforms — and Three More Secret Spots

Along the Northern Rim Trail, three viewing platforms with gazebos and benches are officially installed. They are convenient, safe, and offer good views. But — let`s be honest — the most beautiful views are not from them.

The main highlight of the Charyn Canyon Northern Rim Trail is the branching trails. These are small paths that branch off the main road and lead to rocks standing closer to the center of the canyon. These ledges, like balconies, jut out over the abyss, and from them, a view opens that is not available from any official platform:
• you stand almost in the center of the "Valley of Castles,"
• the canyon stretches below you on both sides,
• and opposite you are those very towers that you would otherwise only see from below, looking up.

The Contrast Visible Only from Above

As you move along the Northern Rim Trail, you approach the Charyn River — and here a beautiful visual miracle occurs. The canyon slopes gradually change color: bright red sandstones give way to dark, almost black basalts. This contrast — red and black, warm and cool — is one of those details worth climbing up for.

Who Is the Charyn Canyon Northern Rim Trail For?

The Northern Rim Trail is for those who:
• want to see the canyon from a height,
• are ready to walk longer and without descending, but with views,
• are not afraid to turn off onto inconspicuous paths,
• value geology as much as emotions.

The Bottom Line: Don`t Regret It, Choose Consciously

If you take the Charyn Canyon Northern Rim Trail without knowing that there is another trail down below — you will be disappointed. If you choose it consciously, knowing that you are giving up the descent for the sake of a panoramic view — you will get some of the best views in Kazakhstan.

And what if you want to see both? That is also realistic — and you can do it in one day, but for that, you need to arrive at the Charyn Canyon as early as possible. Accordingly, you should leave Almaty no later than 6 a.m., or better yet, earlier.
