Beijing Hutong

Hutongs are perhaps one of the most controversial phenomena on Beijing`s tourist map. Some guidebooks call them the "soul of the old city" and strongly recommend visiting. Others avoid them, believing there is nothing to see there. Both are right in their own way. The problem is that the word "hutong" in guidebooks is often used without explanation.
