Chekhov Square is located in the Central district of Taganrog. Previously, Alexander Square, which was the main shopping area of the city, was located here. On the eastern side of the square, the Alexander Shopping malls have been preserved, and in front of them there is a Monument to Anton Chekhov. On the opposite side of the square is the Taganrog Bus station.

The great Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov lived in Yalta for his last years, because of tuberculosis, which he contracted during a trip to Sakhalin. He died in 1904, at the age of 44. In the same year, residents of Taganrog appealed to the city council with a petition to install a monument to their great countryman. The decision to create the monument was made in 1910 and fundraising began.

The WWI prevented plans for the installation of a monument to Chekhov and the creation of Chekhov Square. As a result, the idea of installing the monument was returned only in 1960. The author of the project was the sculptor Julian Rukavishnikov. The height of Anton Chekhov`s sculpture in Chekhov Square is 3 meters. The pedestal of the monument is covered with marble slabs. Chekhov is depicted as a young man, as he left his hometown.

Behind the monument is Chekhov Square. There are large trees growing there and there are paths for walking and benches for recreation among them. Taganrog residents and tourists come here to relax.
