The Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1858 on the Town Hall square. The Town Hall of Bern is located next to it. The Church was built in a mixed style. There are also elements of Romanesque style and early Gothic.
The Church of Peter and Paul is the first Catholic Church to be built in Bern after the reformation of the 16th century. Over the centuries, many residents of Bern returned from Protestantism back to the Catholic Church, and it was decided to build a new Church for them.
An international competition was announced for the construction of the Church, which was won by the French architect Pierre Depert. He is known for building the Town Hall in Paris, which is called the Hotel de Ville there.
At the end of the 19th century, the eclectic style was fashionable in architecture, which often combines elements of various styles. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul has Romanesque arches, Gothic stained glass Windows, massive walls and a Gothic rose window. In some places, the temple is painted in the art Nouveau style.
