The Church of the Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary is often called the "Kazan Church of Uglich". In the 15th century, there was a wooden church of the Martyr George of Cappadocia on this site, the wooden walls of the Kremlin towered over it. During the Time of the Turmoil, Polish troops captured Uglich in 1609, and many wooden buildings burned down in a fire.
In 1638, the shopping malls at this place were dismantled and a wooden church of the Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary was erected, but it soon burned down again. The stone Church with the Peter the Great Baroque style was built in 1778 during the reign of Empress Catherine II. At the end of the 18th century, a fire broke out in the church again. The bell tower had to be dismantled. The new bell tower in the classical style was built in 1814.
In Soviet times, the bell tower of the church burned again, but it was restored, since the bell tower with a height of 37 meters was needed for use as a water tower. Kazan Church is the highest church in Uglich. The Uglich HPS was being built nearby, and the church building was given for the needs of builders. It has preserved the Baroque monument of the 18th century to the present day. In 2000, the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary was returned to the church and after restoration, divine services are held in it again.
