At the foot of Levitan mount, on the high Bank of the Volga river, is the Church of the Saint Barbara. It was built in the Zarechnaya Quarter district in 1821, on the site of a wooden St.Barbara Church.
The Church of St. Barbara, and especially its bell tower, have clear architectural features of late classicism. The Church still has paintings from the 19th century. In 1892, the St. Nicholas chapel was added to it.
The Church is a beautiful dominant of Behind-the river Quarter of Ples, if you admire the panorama of the town from the Sobornaya mountain. The Church of St. Barbara can be seen in the paintings of many artists. The most famous of them is the painting of Isaac Levitan "Evening. Golden Ples".
