Back

Approximately 40 kilometers from the resort town of Kemer, far from noisy hotels and crowded beaches, lies one of the most beautiful beaches on the Turkish coast — Çıralı Beach. This three-kilometer stretch of golden sand, nestled among orange groves and ancient olive trees, is considered one of the cleanest and most ecologically significant places in all of Turkey.

Çıralı is not just a beach, but a true nature reserve. On one side, the beach is bordered by majestic mountains covered with pine forests; on the other, the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea wash the shore, and right behind the sandy strip begin the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Olympos. This place attracts travelers tired of resort bustle who wish to touch real, untouched beauty.

The Beach Chosen by Turtles

Çıralı is one of the few places in the world where the natural habitat of rare loggerhead sea turtles, also called caretta caretta, is still preserved. Every year from May to October, these amazing creatures come here to lay their eggs in the warm sand.

Numerous nests of these rare turtles are recorded annually on the three-kilometer-long Çıralı Beach. This is why the beach is under strict state protection. Special rules of conduct apply here aimed at preserving the population:

• It is forbidden to use bright flashlights and flashes after dark — light can disorient newly hatched baby turtles, which by natural instinct must move towards the sea.
• It is forbidden to light fires, pitch tents, or hold parties on the beach at night.
• You must not approach marked nests or touch the egg clutches.

Thanks to such protective measures, thousands of baby turtles successfully make their way to the sea every year. For tourists, this means it is best to enjoy the beach during daylight hours, and evening walks should be taken towards the legendary Mount Chimera or the cozy village cafes.

Beach Features and Swimming

Çıralı Beach is unique in that it combines several types of surface. In the southern part, closer to the ruins of Olympos, the shore is covered with large pebbles, while the central and northern parts are a wide strip of fine golden sand, ideal for leisurely relaxation.

The entry into the sea here is gentle and convenient, and the water is remarkably clear and clean. Because Çıralı Beach has not been spoiled by massive construction and concrete structures, nature has preserved its pristine beauty here. Pine forests come right up to the shoreline, filling the air with the healing scent of pine needles mixed with the sea breeze.

On Çıralı Beach, there are both public areas and private sections belonging to local pensions and bungalows, where guests are provided with sunbeds and umbrellas free of charge. However, unlike the crowded resorts of Kemer or Antalya, it is never too crowded here — even in the high season, you can find a secluded spot.

Ancient Olympos — A City Reaching into the Sea

One of the main attractions that makes Çıralı Beach unique is the immediate proximity of the ancient city of Olympos. The ruins of the ancient settlement literally begin right behind the sandy strip.

Olympos was founded in the Hellenistic period, presumably in the 3rd–2nd centuries BC, and named after the nearby Mount Olympos, which is today called Tahtalı. During the Roman era, the city flourished — temples, theaters, baths, and gymnasiums were built here. Emperor Hadrian visited Olympos in the 2nd century, after which the city even bore the name Hadrianopolis.

Today, the ruins of Olympos are scattered across a picturesque valley through which the Ulupınar River flows. Amidst thickets of laurel, oleander, and pines, you can see the remains of Roman baths with preserved vaults, fragments of city walls, an ancient theater, an aqueduct, and numerous sarcophagi scattered right among the greenery. Entry to the territory of the ancient city is paid.

Village Atmosphere and Eco-Friendly Holiday

The village of Çıralı, stretching along the coast, is a model of eco-tourism. There are no high-rise hotels or concrete blocks here — instead, guests are welcomed by cozy family-run pensions, guesthouses, and bungalows nestled in the greenery of orange groves.

Many hotels have their own grounds with fruit trees, where in season you can pick a ripe orange or pomegranate straight from the branch. Guesthouses offer breakfasts made from fresh organic products — homemade cheeses, olives, freshly squeezed juices, and aromatic village bread.

The atmosphere in Çıralı lends itself to a leisurely holiday. You won`t find noisy discos or nightclubs here — life flows calmly and quietly. In the evening, guests gather in cozy restaurants with a sea view, try local Mediterranean cuisine, and enjoy the silence broken only by the sound of the surf and the chirping of cicadas.
