The City Theater of Bern (Stadttheater) is located near the Kornhausbrücke bridge. It hosts Opera and ballet performances, as well as drama performances. It also hosts concerts by famous Opera artists.
The idea of building a theater in Bern appeared from members of the "Grande Société" society as early as 1766. Then the first Hotel de Music building appeared, however, it was very small and not suitable for performances with a large number of spectators. Therefore, by the end of the 19th century, it was decided to start building a large theater.
The construction of the City Theater was started in 1896. The neoclassical building was designed by architect Rene von Furstenberg at the square Kornhausplatz, near the bridge. On September 25, 1903, the first premiere, Wagner`s Opera Tannhauser, was staged at the Theater.
