The Ivanovo Art Museum is one of the most interesting regional museums dedicated to fine art. Its exposition is located in a two-story building from 1886. It is built of red brick in an eclectic architectural style. Until 1917, it housed the Ivanovo Real School and a coloristic workshop. In this workshop, students studied the technology of dyeing fabrics.

The Ivanovo Art Museum was established in 1959 on the basis of the collection of the Dmitry Burylin Museum of Industry and Art. He had a textile factory in Ivanovo. He is also known as a collector and philanthropist. On the basis of his collections, the Museum of Industry and Art was first created, and then part of the collections were transferred to the Ivanovo Art Museum.

Of great interest from Burylin`s collections is the exhibition Art of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient World. Here you can see a mummy and a sarcophagus from the necropolis of the shield-bearer Ankhef. This is the period of the 13th dynasty (10th century BC). There is also a marble sarcophagus and busts of the Roman era, as well as products of medieval jewelers and coiners from Western Europe.

The Ivanovo Art Museum has an interesting collection of Russian avant-garde. It is represented by the works of Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, Olga Rozanova, Varvara Stepanova, Robert Falk and many others. The exposition of the avant-garde of the Ivanovo Museum complements the collections of other famous museums, such as the New Tretyakov Gallery, where you can get acquainted with the trends in the development of Russian contemporary art.

The Art Museum has paintings by artists from Western Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as Russian artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. Main Russian art museums, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg have donated paintings by famous Russian artists to the Ivanovo Art Museum: Ilya Repin, Karl Bryulov, Vasily Polenov, Vasily Perov and many others.
