Mount Calis is located directly within the city limits of Kemer, situated between the central part of the resort and the village of Kiris. The mountain`s height is 318 meters above sea level. Along the coast from Alanya to Antalya, the Taurus Mountains are usually set back from the sea, but in Kemer they approach the water closely, and Calis serves as a characteristic example of this topography. The mountain`s slopes are covered with a dense pine forest, which positively influences the microclimate: the air here is fresher than in other parts of the coast and is saturated with the scent of pine needles.
The Summit of Mount Calis and the Ascent to the Flag
A large Turkish flag, clearly visible from any point in Kemer, is planted at the summit of Mount Calis. There are two main ways to reach it: via an asphalt road from the Kiris side or via a dirt road from the Kemer-Kiris highway. The length of the official tourist route is about 7.5 kilometers, and the ascent takes approximately 3.5 hours. Vehicle access is blocked by a barrier, so the summit can only be reached on foot.
Coastal Trails on Mount Calis and Viewpoints
The most picturesque part of the mountain faces the sea. The routes start near Moonlight Bay and head west along the shoreline. The paths here are relatively gentle and suitable even for tourists without special physical training. Along the way, there are several equipped viewpoints marked by blue waste bins. From these spots, panoramic views open up over Kemer, Kiris, and Camyuva.
Descents to Secluded Bays
From the main trails, there are branches leading down to the water. One of these descents leads to Big Stone Bay. This is an isolated spot occasionally visited by pleasure yachts. The descent is quite steep, but it allows you to swim in clean water and relax on a wild, pebbly beach away from people.
Another descent leads to a small rocky cove favored by divers and private yacht owners. Descending there also requires caution due to the steep slope, but the place is quite secluded and suitable for those seeking privacy and wanting to swim away from crowded beaches.
The Eastern Slope and Pirates` Cave
The eastern slope of Mount Calis overlooks Pirates` Cave. The cave itself cannot be seen from above — it is located right at the water`s edge — but walking along this slope provides a good view of the rocky coastline. In addition to Pirates` Cave, the mountain contains many small karst cavities — natural depressions formed in the limestone rocks as a result of rock being washed away by water over thousands of years.
Flora on Mount Calis
The slopes of Calis are covered with coniferous forest. The main tree species are Calabrian pine and cedar. The forest is dense, with an undergrowth of evergreen shrubs. Among the trees, the Strawberry Tree can be found. This plant is notable for its smooth, coral-red bark, which begins to peel off in thin layers in spring, revealing young green bark underneath. The tree`s fruits resemble strawberries in appearance, but they taste mealy and bland. The tree is not common and is of interest to botany enthusiasts.
Practical Recommendations
Access to the trails on Mount Calis is free. It is best to plan your walk for the morning hours before the intense heat sets in. Be sure to bring a supply of water — at least one liter per person — as well as a light snack. Footwear should be comfortable with non-slip soles; sneakers or trekking boots are suitable.
On the trails of Mount Calis, you may encounter turtles, lizards, and occasionally mountain goats. During the warm season, snakes can be found in the grass, so it is not recommended to leave the trail or walk through tall grass unnecessarily.
