The Novocherkassk Museum of Don Cossacks History is on Platov Avenue, near the Yermak Square where the Ascension Cathedral is located. The museum was founded in 1899, that is, it is the oldest museum in the south of Russia. The museum exhibits were collected by all the Don cossack stanitsas.
In the main rooms on the ground floor of the museum you can see the big sculptures and canvases devoted to the life of the Don Cossack Host in 17-18 centuries: Yermak`s campaigns, cossacks in Azov, etc. There you can see the original things from the cossack household of 19 century.
The pride of the museum is a collection of cossack banners, regimental standards and horsetails of the Don Cossack Host of 18-19 centuries. In the museum there also remained the belongings of Matvey Platov, the Don ataman, the hero of the Patriotic War and the founder of Novocherkassk.
It will also be very interesting to look at the collection cold and fire arms of 18-19 centuries, most of which is the honorary weapons of the generals and officers of the Don Cossack Host.
A separate exposition is devoted to the things discovered during the excavations of the gorodishches of the earlier periods. The exhibition of Russian and Western Europe painting and graphics of 16-18 centuries is on the first floor of the museum. You can see there the works of the academician of painting, a native of Novocherkassk, N. N. Dubovsky, as well as the world`s only collection of cossack grand portraits of 18 century «The Don painted portrait».
