Novocherkassk, the capital of the Don Cossack Host, is located 40 kilometers to the north-east from Rostov-on-Don and in the immediate vicinity of the М4 Moscow-Don highway. There are located very interesting travel attractions: Ascension Host cathedral, Ataman Palace and Museum of Don Cossacks History
In 1804 Matvey Platov, the ataman of the Don Cossack Host, took a decision to move the capital of the Cossack Host to a new place, as the former capital, Cherkassk, as well as its approach roads, were annually flooded during the overflows of the Don. However, the development of the new capital dragged on for decades because of the unwillingness of the cossacks to go far from the Don.
You can see interesting sights related to the Don Cossacks in Novocherkassk. The Don Нost Cathedral of the Ascension is on the Yermak Square in the center of the city. It is one of the highest churches in Russia. The Ataman Palace and the Museum of Don Cossacks History is on the nearby Platov Avenue.
The construction of the Ascension Cathedral began just after the foundation of the city in 1805. But unfortunately, the unfinished cathedral collapsed two times and consequently it was consecrated only a hundred years later on May 6, 1905. In 2014 the Don Нost Cathedral of the Ascension was given the status of a patriarchal church. The Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin has the same status.
It will very interesting to visit the Museum of Don Cossacks History. Some expositions of the museum are at the Ataman Palace. There you can get to know the history and household of the Don Cossack Host in 17-19 centuries.
