The city of Ouarzazate is 350 km of Agadir and 200 km of Morocco. The city itself isn’t a significant tourist center but definitely, there is something to see in its environs.
There you can see the appearance of medieval Moroccan fortresses or kasbas. They are clay constructions built in characteristic Berber style. And some of them are rather picturesque, especially those, which are best preserved.
But surely, Ait-Ben-Haddou is the most interesting kasba, included in UNESCO heritage list. It is located only 10 km of Ouarzazate if you go to Marrakesh. There is also a well-preserved kasba in the center of Ouarzazate. It is a kind of historical site of the city. There are many hotels and various souvenir shops around it.
If you don’t want to stay in Ouarzazate, you may go further east down the road of «thousand kasbas». Indeed, there are many kasbas along the way, but most of them are destroyed. The most interesting kasba is Meridiel in Skura, but you can not see it, as well as other citadels, from the road, so you must take care not to miss them when you travel alone.
Todra Gorge near Tenerhir is also rather interesting. To be more exact, it is just interesting, and not unique and wonderful, as they usually put it in some tourist guides.
How to get
Air communication. There is an airport in the city, so you may only think of flights if you are in the area of so-called «empire cities». All of them are about 500-600 km of the city, and the last 200 km of the road goes over the highest ridge of the Atlas Mountains. So, it would take you at least 10-12 hours to go there by car.
Highways. Some highways go from Ouarzazate. If you stay in Agadir, you can easily drive the distance of 380 km by car. Only for the last 100 km the road going over the Middle Atlas is very narrow. However, for the first 150 km Agadir highway is very good.
There are also two Mersuga highways. The northern one passes by Skura and Tenerhir, and its only disadvantage is that it always goes through densely populated villages.
Railroads. There is no railway communication in this part of the country.
