The Sergiev Posad Museum of Local Lore is a branch of the Sergiev Posad City Museum. Its main exposition is located in the Stable Yard, on the square in front of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The Museum of Local Lore is located in a separate building at 9a Ovrazhny Lane.
The exposition in the Stable Yard dates back to the period from ancient times to the beginning of the 19th century. There are many products of local artisans, as well as religious art. In the Sergiev Posad Museum of Local Lore, you can see an exposition dedicated to the history of the city from the end of the 19th century to the present day. In the 19th century Sergiev Posad, which was formed around the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, was already a fairly large city.
Here you can see how the railway was laid from Moscow to Sergiev Posad in 1862. Tens of thousands of people came to Sergiev Posad by rail every month. Crafts that served pilgrims were actively developing in the city.
Sergiev Posad is considered the "toy capital" of Russia. Crafts for the manufacture of toys and dolls have been developing in Sergiev Posad for three centuries. By the beginning of the 20th century, a huge number of artisans united in an artel of toy manufacturers. At this time, dolls began to be made in Sergiev Posad, which became famous throughout Russia. In 1930, the city of Sergiev Posad was renamed Zagorsk. In 1960, the Zagorsk Toy Factory #1 was established here. All the children of the Soviet Union played with these toys.
The large exposition of the Sergiev Posad Museum of Local Lore is dedicated to the events of the Revolution of 1917, as well as the WWII. In 1941, Sergiev Posad was being prepared for an assault, anti-tank hedgehogs were installed around the Lavra. However, the Germans were stopped in Dmitrov, 50 kilometers west of Sergiev Posad.
