The Tchaikovsky Memorial House is located on Grecheskaya Street near the Stone Staircase. This is a fairly large house, but the residents of Taganrog call it a " Small House". It is built on the edge of a cliff above the sea shore, where the Pushkin Embankment passes. This is the historical center of the city.

Anton Chekhov wrote in a letter to his brother: "If I were rich, I would certainly buy the house where Ippolit Tchaikovsky lived." The house with a large attic and a mezzanine is built of red brick. Above it rises a beautiful tower with battlements in the Italian style, which gives the house Gothic features.

Tchaikovsky`s house was built in the 1860s. From 1883 to 1894, it was leased by the Russian Shipping and Trade Society for its representative, Captain 1st rank Ippolit Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the younger brother of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The great Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky came to Taganrog three times to visit his brother in 1886, 1888 and 1890.

Until 1920, this house continued to be rented out. From 1920 to 1966, the building of the children`s hospital was located here, and since 1974, the Chekhov library and a chamber concert hall have been opened.

In one of the rooms of the house there is a museum exhibition dedicated to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his brother Ippolit, who lived in this house. The work schedule of this room needs to be clarified, since it is not listed in the directories. This room is closed most of the time.
