The wooden Trinity Church in Valdai was built at the end of the 17th century, when Patriarch Nikon founded the Valdai Iver Monastery on the lake. It is located on the Silvitsky Island, which is now connected to the ground by bridges. In those days, it was only possible to reach it by boat. Patriarch Nikon named the ancient settlement on the shore opposite the monastery Bogoroditskoye village. It housed a pilgrimage center and a church.
The wooden temple on Valdai burned several times. During the reign of Empress Elizabeth, a stone church was built in Valdai, but there were also fires in it. In 1770, Catherine II granted Valdai the status of a city. The Trinity Church became the cathedral of the city. In the 19th century, several chapels were added to the cathedral, which significantly increased its size. The biggest fire in the Trinity Cathedral occurred in 1854, when only a few icons and relics were saved.
In 1928, the Bolsheviks closed the Trinity Cathedral. During the WWII, it housed a hospital, and after the war, a house of culture was opened here. The building was substantially reconstructed, and it no longer resembled a church. In 1993, a fire broke out in the House of culture again and until the end of the 1990s it stood in ruins. In 1998, the ruins of the cathedral were transferred to the church and its restoration began. Now the Trinity Cathedral has been restored in the Baroque style. This is how it looked in the middle of the 19th century.
