Tver City Garden is located to the east of the Travel Palace and the Palace Garden. The main alley of the garden is laid between the Volga River and Sovetskaya Street. Previously, the fortress wall of the Kremlin and a moat with water passed through this place. The length of the main alley reaches 200 meters, and the total area of the City Garden is 9 hectares.
The city of Tver was founded in 1135 on the peninsula, at the confluence of the Tmaka River with the Volga river. A wooden Tver Kremlin was built on this site, and in 1286 the stone Transfiguration Cathedral was laid. In the 14th century, the Tver princes fought with Moscow for the right to lead the unification of the Russian principalities into a single state. However, they lost, and Tver became part of the Moscow Principality. The Tver Kremlin lost its defensive significance and after that stone buildings were not erected on its territory.
In 1763, a fire broke out in the Tver Kremlin, which destroyed all wooden buildings. In the western part of the former territory of the Kremlin, Empress Catherine II ordered the construction of the Tver Travel Palace. A palace garden was laid out between the palace and the Volga in 1776.
The eastern part of the burnt-out Kremlin remained undeveloped and two gardens were created in its place: the Governor`s Garden and the Public Garden. In 1931, these gardens were united into a single City Garden. It has become a place of rest for residents of Tver and guests of the city.
The northern part of the garden overlooks the pedestrian zone of the Mikhail Yaroslavich Embankment. A beautiful view of the Volga River opens from the high embankment, the Old-Volzhsky Bridge is visible in the distance. In Soviet times, children attractions were installed in the Tver City Garden, but now they are outdated.
Tver City Garden has a regular layout. The main alley is located at the place where the fortress wall of the Tver Kremlin used to be. It begins near the Tver Drama Theater. There is a monument to Prince Mikhail Yaroslavich of Tver in this place.
