The Volga embankment in Ples stretches for 1.5 kilometers at the foot of the Levitan mount, and Sobornaya and Resurrection mountains. On the west side, the embankment ends near the Cat sculpture, and on the East side - near the sculpture of Lady on Vacation in front of the Landscape Museum.
Walking along the embankment of the great Russian river Volga is a pleasure. It was built in 1781, by order of the Empress Catherine II. A special Commission was responsible for planning the construction of houses on the embankment. Houses were allowed to be built in the style of a “single façade” and only those that were approved by the Empress in the register of buildings. This makes the Ples embankment look very beautiful.
Many houses on the Volga embankment have been preserved since the 19th century. Basically, it was the merchants manor: The house with the Mezzanine, the estate of the merchant Gromov estate merchant Novozhilov, house of Podgornov, house of Vvedensky. The Customs building has been preserved even since the 18th century.
In general, Ples recreates the atmosphere of a quiet district Russian town of the 19th century. Cruise ships are moored at the pier on the embankment, as Ples invariably attracts tourists with the beauty of its landscapes.
The width of the Volga in the Ples reaches 700 meters. This is one of the narrowest places in the middle Volga river. A few kilometers upstream, in Kostroma, the width of the Volga reaches 1.5 km, and downstream, near Yuryevets, the Gorky reservoir begins, where the river turns into a sea with a width of tens of kilometers.
