The construction of the triumphal arch of Septimius Severus was timed to the 10th anniversary of his rule. During 195-205 A.D. Septimius Severus together with his sons, Caracalla and Geta, undertook several successful campaigns in Parthia. As a result, the Parthians were defeated.

The arch is on the Via Sacra at the foot of the Capitoline hill. The height of the arch is 20 meters and its width is 23 meters. The arch has three spans. It was built from travertine and finished with marble panels.

The marble panels remained in a good condition. The episodes of the war with Parthia are depicted on the panels: storms of Edessa, Ktesiphon, Seleucia and the capture of a Parthian tsar.
