The Astrakhan Dogadin art gallery is in a 19-century merchant house in Sverdlov street. It is one of the largest collection of Russian painting of 18-20 centuries in the Povolzhye (Volga region).
Pavel Dogadin was born in a family of Astrakhan merchants in 1876. In 1910 he wanted to create a picture gallery in his native town, and already by 1917 he had a large collection of pictures of the most famous Russian painters in his house. That same year, after the Bolsheviks came to power, he gave his house and picture collection to the city.
At the gallery there are many pictures of Shishkin, Repin, Polenov, Bryullov, Savrasov and some other painters of 19 century. Also, you can see there the pictures of famous avant-garde artists, such as: Kandinsky, Malevich, Shagal, etc.
