The Historical and Art Museum of Arzamas is one of the city`s tourist attractions. The museum serves as an important center for preserving the cultural, historical, and artistic heritage of the region. His exhibitions are devoted to the rich history of Arzamas, its role in the development of Russia, as well as personalities associated with the city.

The Historical and Art Museum of Arzamas was founded in 1957. Its establishment was the result of efforts by local historians and enthusiasts who sought to preserve the heritage of Arzamas. Although the city was founded only in 1578, it quickly became an important trade center of the empire, which contributed to the development of crafts and art.

The main exhibition is housed in a two-story building located at Cathedral Square, 9. This building, constructed in the classical style, is an architectural monument of the 19th century. It is situated near Lenin Garden, within walking distance of Cathedral Square in Arzamas. Temporary exhibitions are held in another museum building located at Karl Marx Street, 53b.

Previously, the Arzamas Historical and Art Museum included branches dedicated to the famous writers Arkady Gaidar and Maxim Gorky. In 1967, a separate Literary Museum of Gaidar was built in Arzamas, and in 1982, a separate Memorial Museum of Maxim Gorky was established.

The main exhibitions of the Historical and Art Museum of Arzamas include:

• Historical exposition: This section features artifacts that devoting the history of Arzamas and its surroundings. Among the exhibits are household items, tools, weapons, documents, and photographs that illustrate the life of the city from its foundation to the present day.

• Art Collection: The museum takes pride in its collection of paintings, graphics, and decorative arts. The exhibition includes works from the Arzamas School of Painting founded by Alexander Stupin. Born in Arzamas, Stupin organized the first Provincial School of Painting in Russia in 1802. Of great interest are also the 18th-19th century icons created in Arzamas workshops, which were renowned throughout the country for their craftsmanship.

• Ethnographic exposition: This section is dedicated to the traditional culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants of Arzamas and the Nizhny Novgorod region. Here, you can see folk costumes, household items, craftworks, and tools used in daily life. There is also an exhibition dedicated to the famous Arzamas geese.

The Historical and Art Museum of Arzamas regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and guided tours that attract both locals and tourists. The museum also collaborates with educational institutions, offering programs for schoolchildren and students aimed at studying the history and culture of their native region.
