The Bird-House is one of the most famous houses in Ivanovo, built in the architectural style of Soviet constructivism. It is located on Lenin Avenue, the main street of the city. Nearby is a Ship-House, another famous symbol of constructivism in Ivanovo.
The Bird-House in Ivanovo was built in 1928 by architect Vasily Pankov. This building was built for the school, which is still there. The shape of the building from above resembles the wings of a bird, so it was called a "Bird House".
The first Soviet labor school in Ivanovo was established in the early 1920s on the basis of a Real school. Now an Art Museum of Ivanovo is located in its old building. After the completion of the Bird-House, the school moved into this new building. It was named the First Soviet School of the second degree of the decade of the October Revolution. Then it was the best school in Ivanovo. Now Gymnasium No. 32 is located here.
To understand that the building has the shape of a bird`s wings, you can only see the school from above. In the Soviet years, a large school building was attached to the "left wing" of the bird house, but the shape of the wings of the building is still noticeable.
An unusual tower rises above the house from Lenin Avenue. The architect planned to make an observatory with a telescope for studying astronomy there. Previously, the tower was used for its intended purpose, but now it has become dilapidated and it has been closed.
