The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov is one of the main attractions of Novorossiysk. In 2002, it was moored near Forum square and turned into a Museum. If you come to Novorossiysk, then you must get on board this cruiser.
The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov was launched in 1952. It was built according to the project 68-bis, which in those years was recognized as one of the best in the construction of warships with a large displacement. After the war, the Soviet Union could not build battleships, but the cruisers of the 68bis project were slightly inferior to them in their characteristics.
For the first time in the history of world shipbuilding, the ship`s hull was made by an all-welded method, without rivets. Armoring elements were included in the hull when it was manufactured. The ship`s hull had a double bottom and was divided into 23 sealed compartments. The dimensions of the hull are 210 meters long and 22 meters wide. According to its seaworthiness characteristics, the cruiser is still one of the best in the world.
The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov was based in Sevastopol. During his service, he passed more than 200 thousand nautical miles in the waters of different seas. During the 1967-68 Arab-Israeli wars, he was stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean to assist Egypt and Syria.
In 1999, the cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov was transferred to the museum of the Black Sea fleet and since 2002 has been moored on the Novorossiysk embankment. For tourists, it is open as a deck, where you can see the weapons and equipment of the cruiser, as well as the interior of the ship.
