Djami Kebir mosque is located next to Larnaca castle. The Finikoudes embankment is located nearby. The Catholic Church of Saint Catherine on this site was built in the 16th century, when Cyprus was owned by the Venetians.
In 1571, Cyprus became a part of the Ottoman Empire, and the Djami Kebir mosque was built on the site of St. Catherine`s Church. It was named the Great Mosque because it was the first in Cyprus.
By the 19th century, the old mosque building had fallen into disrepair, so a new one was built in 1835. It has been preserved to this day. At the same time, a high minaret was built, which is visible from many places in the old city.
The two-story building of the mosque is built of white stone. The main entrance to the Djami Kebir mosque is on the north side and runs between five arches. Visitors have to go up the stairs. The prayer hall is located on the second floor, and it is arranged quite modestly. Tourists can enter the mosque when there is no service.
