The guardhouse was built in the center of the Astrakhan Kremlin in 1707 when Peter I introduced garrisons and commandant`s offices during the army reform. The guardhouse was reconstructed in 1808 and since that time the building remained intact to our days. Today it is a museum.

Apart from holding in custody delinquent officers and soldiers, the guardhouse was also used to store the garrison treasury. This museum is especially interesting as there remained very few such guardhouses in the other cities of Russia.

At the museum you can see the office of garrison commander, an officers` sitting-room, as well as rooms for arrested soldiers, a guardhouse and a punishment cell. And on the walls you can see various maps, photos and documents related to the history of Astrakhan.
