Back

Imerovigli is not just a picturesque village, but a place with an interesting history. Its name translates from Greek as "day shift" or "day watch." And this is no coincidence: in the 13th century, when Santorini was under Venetian rule, a powerful fortress was built on top of Skaros Rock.

This fortress was the first of five built on the island to protect against pirate raids. From its peak, the view extended for many kilometers, allowing lookouts to spot approaching enemy ships in advance. In case of danger, a huge bell alerted the residents of nearby settlements, and they took shelter behind the walls of the "Kasteli" fort.

A whole town gradually grew around the fortress, with residential houses, shops, a church, and even a small harbor at the foot of the rock. However, the fate of this place was sealed by its geography. Santorini is a seismically active region, and in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, powerful earthquakes almost completely destroyed the fortress. The surviving residents abandoned the inhospitable cliffs and moved to safer places, founding modern-day Fira.

Today, Imerovigli is not the ruins of former glory, but one of the quietest resorts on Santorini. Located about 300 meters above sea level, it is the highest village on the caldera`s edge. It is often called the "Balcony of the Aegean Sea."

What to See and Do in Imerovigli

Skaros Rock – The Heart of Imerovigli
This is, without a doubt, the main attraction and the "calling card" of the village. Skaros Rock is a massive volcanic promontory jutting into the azure waters of the caldera.
• What you will see: The ruins of the Venetian fortress scattered along the slope. The trail to the rock itself is an adventure. It starts at the foot of the village and is a steep stone staircase winding through black and red volcanic rock.
• Theoskepasti Chapel: About halfway to the top, you will find a tiny whitewashed church, literally "glued" to the cliff. Its name translates as "The Place Where God Sees," and this is probably the best description of the view from there.
Tip: The ascent and descent will take about 45-60 minutes. Wear comfortable sports shoes and bring water – the path is rocky and steep in places. Access to the rock is free and open 24/7.

The Fira – Oia Panoramic Trail
Imerovigli is the ideal starting point or a key stop on the famous hiking trail from Fira to Oia.
• Description: This trail, about 10 km long, is considered one of the most beautiful hiking routes in the world. The path runs along the very edge of the caldera, offering breathtaking views of the volcano and the sea.
• Features: You will walk past whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and cozy hotels. The trail itself is a mix of paved streets and dirt paths.
• Beauty of the section: The segment passing through Imerovigli is perhaps the most photogenic. It offers a classic postcard perspective of white houses set against the backdrop of Skaros Rock.

The Luxury and Architecture of Imerovigli Village
Imerovigli is a center of quiet luxury on Santorini. Unlike busy Oia, a peaceful atmosphere reigns here.
• Architecture: The village is a classic example of Cycladic architecture: narrow paved streets, dazzling white houses, blue shutters, and an abundance of flowers.
• Hotels and Spas: This is where some of the most expensive and prestigious hotels on the island are located, featuring infinity pools that seem to "hover" over the cliff.

Gastronomy: Where to Eat with a View

Despite its chamber size, Imerovigli boasts an excellent restaurant scene. The main highlight of local establishments is the stunning sunset view. Here are a few recommended places:

• The Athenian House: This is, perhaps, one of the best restaurants on the island. They serve exquisite dishes of Greek cuisine from the famous chef and TV presenter Dimitris Skarmoutsos. The restaurant has an extensive collection of local Assyrtiko wines. Be sure to book a table in advance and bring warm clothes – it can be windy on the cliff in the evening.
• White Lounge Restaurant: An excellent choice for a romantic dinner. They serve classic Mediterranean seafood and meat dishes, as well as organic wines from Santorini`s small wineries.
• Blue Note Restaurant: If you want something more affordable but equally authentic, stop by here. The restaurant`s specialty is fresh local fish and traditional Greek appetizers.

There are no beaches in Imerovigli (the nearest sandy beach is Exo Gialos, 5 km away). But the beauty of this place is not in swimming, but in the panoramas. The best time for walks is early morning (for sunrises) and the time before sunset. If you want noisy clubs, a taxi or bus will take you to the island`s capital, Fira, in 10 minutes.
