Museum of the The Brothers Karamazov in Old Russa

The Museum of Fyodor Dostoevsky`s novel "The Brothers Karamazov" is located on the embankment of the Porusia River, 550 meters from the Dostoevsky House-Museum, which the writer bought in 1873 and came here every summer. These two museums complement each other, so if you are interested in the work of the great Russian writer, then you should definitely visit both museums.

For many years after returning from exile, Fyodor Dostoevsky lived in rented apartments, for several years the Dostoevsky family had to hide from creditors abroad. After returning to Russia, the writer was able to buy a house in Old Russa, which he later called "our nest".

The house in Old Russa was the first that Dostoevsky bought into the property. There was prosperity in the life of his family. Here he worked on the novels The Gambler, the Teenager and the Brothers Karamazov. The novel The Brothers Karamazov became one of the most famous creations of the great Russian writer, so the Dostoevsky Literary Museum in Old Russa decided to dedicate the events and heroes of this novel.

The exposition of the Museum of the Novel The Brothers Karamazov is located in a 19th-century mansion that belonged to the merchant Beklemishevsky. Since the early 2000s, here was housed the Dostoevsky Scientific and Cultural Center, and in 2018 the Museum of the novel The Brothers Karamazov was opened.

Dostoevsky lived in Old Russa when he was working on the novel, so the city became the prototype of Skotoprigonyevsk, where the events of the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" develop. Some residents of the city became prototypes of the novel`s heroes: brothers Mitya, Ivan and Alyosha, as well as their father Fyodor Karamazov. The figures of these heroes can be seen in one of the halls of the museum. It is better to visit the Museum of the novel The Brothers Karamazov with an excursion to understand the deep meaning of the novel and the work of the great Russian writer.
