The Quarter Monti (Rione Monti) is the main attraction of Alberobello. More than a thousand trullos are built close together on the hillside. Their conical roofs look very picturesque from the observation deck of Santa Lucia Belveder.
The Monti district consists of 7 streets leading to the top of the hill from the Largo della Forgia square. The most picturesque streets are Monte Nero (Black mountain), Monte Pasubio (mount Pasubio) and Monte San Michele (Mount Archangel Michael). They have completely preserved their medieval appearance exactly as it was in the 17th century during the time of count Aquaviva.
Most tourists come here, because walking along these small streets between Trullos built close to each other gives real pleasure. During this walk you should see a Trullo Siamese. This is a picturesque double Trullo. It has a roof fused into a single whole and it has two facades facing different streets.
The Monti area was declared a national monument in 1909. Subsequently, this status was also granted to the neighboring district of Aia Piccola, and then in 1996 the entire Alberobello was included in the UNESCO historical heritage lists.
