Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum is in the House of the Military Governor in the eastern part of the Kremlin. You can see some of its collections in the other museum building on the Upper Volga River Embankment.
The museum was founded in 1896. It is one of the oldest museums in Russia and one of the largest art museums in the Povolzhye (Volga Region). There are a lot of very interesting works of famous Russian and Western Europe painters.
The collections of the future museum were started by the artists А. Karelin and N. Koshelev in 19 century. Their collections were added by the pictures given by the Academy of Arts, as well as by the painters I. Repin, К. Makovsky, А. Ryabushkin and А. Bogolyubov.
At the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum you can see the following pictures: «The Flying Carpet» by Victor Vasnetsov, «A Shy Peasant» by Ilya Repin, «On the Way to the Perpetual Bliss» by Vasily Perov, «Woman under the Umbrella» by Ivan Kramskoy, «Svetlana`s Divination» by Karl Brullov, and many other works.
