The city of Novorossiysk is located on the shore of the deep-water Tsemess Bay. It is the largest Russian port on the Black sea, so the entire Eastern and Northern coast of the Bay is occupied by port terminals and access roads to them.
The residential and recreational part of Novorossiysk is located on the Western shore of Tsemess Bay. There is a beautiful embankment and many attractions related to the events of the World War II. In the south there are beach areas for swimming. Tourists most often visit Novorossiysk with a day trip for sightseeing.
On the site of Novorossiysk there was a Turkish fortress Sudzhuk-Kale, destroyed in the first half of the 19th century. In 1838, these lands were transferred to Russia, and a squadron under the command of admirals Raevsky and Lazarev entered Tsemess Bay.
The Admiral Serebryakov Embankment stretches along the western bank. Admiral Lazar Markovich Serebryakov also arrived here as part of the first squadron. Since 1939, he was the commander of the 1st division of the Black Sea coast line and the head of the Novorossiysk port. He supervised all the construction of the city and port, so he is considered the founder of the city of Novorossiysk. In many places on the embankment there are monuments and sculptures, but the real center of Novorossiysk is Forum square, which is located near the port in the North-Western part of the Bay.
On Forum square there is a stele "Sea glory of Russia" and a monument to the founders of the city Serebryakov, Raevsky and Lazarev. From the square you can go to the Novorossiysk Sea station. The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov, which has been turned into a Museum since 2002, is moored nearby.
From the area of Forum square the nice Admiral Serebryakov embankment continues to the South. Near Forum square there is a Central beach covered with pebbles. Neptune beach also stretches along the embankment for several hundred meters. There are several monuments, sculptures and the St. Nicholas chapel on the embankment.
The Small Land Memorial is located in the South of Novorossiysk. It is dedicated to the exploits of Russian soldiers during World war II. During the landing operation on February 4, 1943, they were able to gain a foothold on a small piece of land (28 km2) in the South-Western part of the city and defend it for 225 days under continuous shelling by German troops, until the liberation of Novorossiysk. After these events, the city was awarded the title "Hero City".
Novorossiysk is surrounded by the Caucasus mountain range. Here their height is low, between them are numerous gorges suitable for growing grapes. That is why a large number of wine estates were created in the Novorossiysk district. You should definitely go to the estate of Abrau-Durso, where a champagne factory was established in 1870. Also an interesting trip will be an excursion to the Old Park in the village of Kabardinka.
