The beach and the embankment of Derbent are located on the shore of the Caspian Sea, in the north of the city. Most tourists come to Derbent for the sake of ancient sights; however, the city is transformed and becomes interesting not only for sightseeing tourism, but also as a place where you can swim in the sea.
Alas, but a significant obstacle to the development of the resort atmosphere in Derbent is the railway, which is laid along the Caspian Sea. The Soviet builders had no other opportunity, since the Caucasus Mountains in Derbent approach 3 kilometers to the Caspian Sea, and the upper part of the city near Naryn-Kala fortress is built up with ancient buildings. A narrow strip along the sea (300-500 meters) is separated from the rest of the city by a railway. You can get there only by 2 bridges laid over the railway.
Over time, an industrial zone was formed around the railway, built up with technical buildings and garages. Many of them are now abandoned. This makes it difficult to create a resort atmosphere in the coastal zone of Derbent.
The coast of the Caspian Sea in Derbent is rocky. Sand is usually brought to the beaches of Derbent from other areas. During storms, a large number of shells are thrown ashore. It is not convenient to walk on them barefoot.
In 2017, a spacious sandy beach was built in the north of Derbent, so now it makes no sense to go to suburban camp sites. Previously, this beach was called "Breeze", but now in some guidebooks it is called "Golden Beach". It stretches for 2 kilometers. In some places, the width of the beach reaches 150 meters. There is the entire necessary infrastructure for comfortable bathing. Visiting the beach is free.
The Derbent Embankment was built near the Breeze Beach, its length is 500 meters. It is not just an embankment, but a beautiful park area. Trees and flowers have been planted here, fountains and pavilions have been built. In the center of the embankment there is a large monument "Gates of United Cultures". It is dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Derbent. You can climb it to look at the beach and the embankment from above.
The water in the Caspian Sea warms up for swimming only at the end of June. After that, the bathing season lasts until September. The water in the Caspian Sea is saltier than in the Black Sea. The entrance to the sea on the Derbent beach is very flat, so it is comfortable to relax with children here.
