The Golden Gate is considered one of the most important monuments of the ancient Russian architecture. They were built in 1164 by Andrei the Bogolyubsky, almost at the same time as Assumption Cathedral.
In the Middle Ages one can enter the city through five gates (Volzhskiye, Irininy, Copper, Sil-ver and Golden), but the Golden Gate was the main one. It served the ceremonial functions and emphasized the significance of Vladimir Princedom.
The Golden Gate was constructed by the craftsmen of Vladimir. According to the chronicles, the gate itself was covered with the sheets of gold. Now a museum is located at the gateway church, where one can see the diorama dedicated to the storm of Vladimir by the troops of Khan Batyi.
