Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre is in the center of a large Theatre minipark near Sibirskaya Street. In 1969 it became «academic» and was put on the same level with the leading theatres of Russia.
Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre was founded in 1870 and its today building was erected four years later in 1874. The opera theatre was named after P. I. Tchaikovski. This Russian composer was born in Votkinsk, which is down the Kama river not far from Perm.
At the time of the Great Patriotic War the famous Mariinsky Theatre was evacuated to Perm where they gave their performances on the stage of the local theatre. After the war some actors of this theatre remained in Perm and helped to develop local talents.
