In Tobolsk the Red Square is the main square in front of the Kremlin on the Alafeyevskaya Mountain. It is a large space planted with grass with regularly arranged walking paths.

A big fountain is in the center of the Red Square. A water tower – an architectural monument of 19 century – is near the fountain. On the side of the Kremlin the Red Square is faced by the walls of the Gostiny Dvor, which is a part of the Tobolsk Kremlin. Formerly, it was occupied by the shops of Tobolsk merchants.

The Tobolsk State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve and the House of Crafts is on the western side of the Red Square. Nikolsky Vzvoz St. (now Kirov street), a steep descent leading from the Alafeyevskaya Mountain to the Nizhny Posad, begins at these two museums. The Yermak`s Garden is on the other end of the street.

From the east the Red Square is faced by the walls of the Tobolsk prison castle. Historically, this strictest Russian prison was near the Tobolsk Kremlin at the heart of the town.
