The New Tretyakov Gallery is located in a spacious building located in Muzeon Park, on the embankment of the Moscow River. The building was built in 1983 in the style of Soviet constructivism by architects Nikolai Sukoyan and Yuri Sheverdyaev. The park area around the art gallery is of great interest.

In the New Tretyakov Gallery, you can see the art collections of modern art dating back to the period of the 20th and 21st centuries. The gallery building will be closed for a complete renovation from 2023 to 2028. During this period, her collections can be viewed in Kommunarka.

The necessity to build a new building appeared in the 1970s. In the main building of the Tretyakov Gallery in Lavrushinsky Lane, there was not enough space even for the main expositions, and the collection of modern art was constantly replenished.
The permanent exhibition of the New Tretyakov Gallery occupies 37 halls on the 4th floor. On the other floors, there are numerous temporary exhibitions that arouse great interest. All the halls of the gallery are very spacious, and it is very comfortable to be in them.

Russian Avant-garde in the New Tretyakov Gallery

In Halls 3 to 14 of the New Tretyakov Gallery, you can see the collection of the Russian avant-garde. This is the most interesting part of the gallery, where the most valuable works of art are presented. The most famous painting of the New Tretyakov Gallery is the Black Square of Kazimir Malevich. There are even two of them here. Drawing a black square is not difficult for any person; however, it is only part of the collection of geometric figures of Malevich, which became the pinnacle of suprematism, the artistic style of the early 20th century.

A separate room is dedicated to the work of Marc Chagall. There are paintings, as well as drawings by the great artist from Vitebsk. The painting "Over the City" (1915) is one of the most famous works of Chagall. He depicted there himself and his wife above the roofs of their native Vitebsk. Another large panel by Chagall is part of the scenery of the Jewish Theater (1920).
In the gallery, you can see a large collection of works by Vasily Kandinsky. He became famous all over the world for his works in the abstract style, but here you can also see his early works in the traditional art style.

In the New Tretyakov Gallery, you can see the works of other artists of the Russian avant-garde: Natalia Goncharova, Pavel Filonov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Yuri Anenkov, Vladimir Tatlin and many others.

Soviet Realism in the New Tretyakov Gallery

In the halls from 15 to 25 of the New Tretyakov Gallery, there is a collection of Soviet art. There are works of Soviet realism, Soviet pop art and many other styles that fell on the era of the Revolution of 1918, as well as the period of Stalin`s rule from 1923 to 1955.

Most of the paintings are painted in the classical style by artists who are known only in Russia. The Russian avant-garde gained worldwide fame, and Soviet realism served more to promote the Soviet system, its success in industry.

Many of the paintings depict the rulers of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. The most famous artists of the era of Soviet realism were Alexander Deineka, Yuri Pimenov, Tatiana Yablonskaya and many others.

Three halls of the New Tretyakov Gallery are dedicated to the Unofficial Art of the 1950-80 years. Here you can see the works of artists who did not pass the political and ideological censorship of the Soviet era, but continued to work. Among them are paintings by the minimalist Francisco Infante-Aran, the pop art artist Mikhail Roginsky and others.
